Sikkens Rubbol XD Gloss

Sikkens Rubbol XD Gloss is a high build, opaque gloss coating for use on all exterior softwood and hardwood joinery and trim, as well as suitably primed metals and hard plastics. Provides outstanding gloss retention. Flexible coating moves with the wood which prevents cracking and peeling.

Surfaces should be primed with Sikkens Rubbol Primer Plus prior to application. This ensures even application and coverage with the best possible bond with the substrate to minimise chances of flaking and peeling.

Ensure that timber surfaces to be treated are suitably prepared, clean, dry and free from surface dust, dirt, wax and grease. The moisture content should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

Do not apply if there is a risk of rain, or when air / substrate temperatures are below 5°C or above 30°C during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the finish.

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Ensure product is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and slight colour variations may be experienced. This product does not require thinning, as this will reduce opacity.

1. Apply using a good quality, long-haired, synthetic bristle brush
2. The product should be applied in a full flowing coat, laying off in the direction of the grain, using the minimum number of brush strokes necessary to produce an acceptable finish
3. Avoid over-brushing, as this will reduce the protection afforded
4. Two coats should be applied, allowing a minimum of 24 hours drying time between coats
5. Pay special attention to any areas of exposed end grain, tops and bottoms of doors, and undersides of window sills
6. If the second coat is not applied within 48 hours, light sanding with a medium grade abrasive, to provide a surface key will be required, ensuring all dust is removed afterwards

Maintenance

The need for maintenance is indicated by a lightening in colour and reduction in sheen as the coating erodes, and a loss of water-repellent properties. If this occurs, simply apply a fresh coat of Sikkens Rubbol XD Gloss, following the Preparation and Application instructions above.
