Sikkens Cetol Novatech

Sikkens Cetol Novatech is designed for the decoration and protection of wooden constructions with large surface areas, such as front cladding, smooth, planed fencing, structural woodwork, wooden buildings and chalets.

The high solids, low build technology of Cetol Novatech results in exceptional flexibility and absorption, making it particularly suitable for 'semi-stable' substrates such as cladding and fencing. Ideally suited for application to softwoods, keeping a 'wet edge' for longer.

Ensure that surfaces to be treated are clean, dry and free from dust, dirt or any other surface contaminants. Application conditions should be between 5°C and 30°C, relative humidity must be no more than 85%. The moisture content of timber to be coated should not exceed 16%.

Bare or New Timber

1. Degrease any exposed bare timber surfaces by wiping with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits
2. Remove any resinous deposits with a scraper
3. Fill any holes or gaps with a suitable wood filler
4. Knotting solution may be used to reduce extractive discolouration, however, knotting solutions are not always effective in 'sealing in' the resin

Previously Coated Surfaces

1. De-nib using a fine grade nylon abrasive pad or a fine grade (P240 or finer) wet or dry silicon carbide abrasive paper, in the direction of the grain
2. Do not break through the surface coating and remove all sanding dust
3. Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate and treated as 'New Timber'

Old Timber

1. All damaged or decayed timber must be removed and replaced, cutting at least 25mm into sound timber
2. When splicing in new sections of wood, consider whether the timber species' natural durability is sufficient
3. Ensure to thoroughly treat timbers, especially in any end grain sections and ensure all materials are fully dry before splicing in
4. Secure with non-ferrous fixings and fill any surrounding voids with a good quality wood filler

Sikkens Cetol Novatech is ready for use straight from the tin and does not require thinning. Stir thoroughly before and during use to ensure a consistent finish.

1. Apply using a good quality, synthetic bristle brush in the direction of the wood grain
2. Excess surface product may be re-distributed for anywhere up to 20 minutes, depending on conditions
3. Where possible, the first coat should be applied to all parts of the component prior to fixing
4. Allow 24 hours drying time
5. For non-joinery, such as cladding and planed timber fences, finish with 1 further coat of Sikkens Cetol Novatech
6. For best results, it is necessary to keep the interval between application of the individual coats as short as possible - this interval should not exceed one month

Maintenance

For best results, it is recommended that the Cetol Novatech is re-applied every 2-3 years.

1. When looking to maintain the coating, take note of the current condition of the finish
2. Then clean, degrease with methylated spirit and sand to create a key
3. If excessive weathering has occurred leaving a grey appearance, the surface must be abraded back to clean bare timber before re-coating
