Overview

We're often asked how to apply decking oil and decking stain products. Although there are a number of applicators and brushes on the market, decking applicator pads are certainly a firm favourite as they work well on both smooth and grooved decking.

Woodleys Decking Applicator is compatible with a wide range of extendable handles due to its changeable fitting and tapered collar. We recommend the Woodleys Lightweight Extension Pole as our tried and tested favourite.

Inside the green tapered sleeve that attaches to the handle is a black plastic insert for accepting handles that have a screw type end. This is easily removed to accept poles of varying widths (maximum pole width 2.5cm or 1 inch).

Traditional wooden broom handle can be secured to the decking applicator with two screws through the guide holes on the applicator sleeve.

The Woodleys Decking Applicator also has a handy angle setting feature, which enables the angle of the applicator to be set to suit your requirements.

The included applicator pad measures approx 178mm x 80mm and can be easily removed for cleaning / replacement. Replacement Woodleys Decking Applicator Pads are available to buy separately.

Aftercare

Cleaning

The Woodleys Decking Applicator can be cleaned but the method is dependent on the type of product used. Most decking products are either water-based or solvent-based.

Water-based decking products can be cleaned off immediately after use using warm soapy water, then rinsed thoroughly. Solvent-based decking products can be cleaned off immediately after use with white spirit, taking care to ensure that none of the decking oil, white spirit or byproduct is released into drains or watercourses.

Replacement provided

The original decking applicator was damaged in transit. I emailed the company and without hesitation they replaced the item. Item received as expected but yet to use it. Would order from Wood Finishes Direct again

Did the job quickly (without the backache)

Swivel pad that will attach to both push fit and threaded poles. I used the screw-in adapter and towards the end of use it was starting to work loose (hence 4 stars). To be fair, my decking is large and I did two coats. On the plus side, the sponge seemed to apply oil into the decking grooves reasonably well and cleaned out well afterwards meaning it can be used again in future.

Made easy work of staining decking boards

Does what it says, covers large areas quickly but when working stain into grooves it needs careful use otherwise you don’t get the stain deep in the groove or you get too much and have to work back and forth to mop up or spread the excess.

Waste of time on decking

Much slower to use than a brush on decking, and wished I just stuck with a brush - which I did in the end.

Itâ€™s a help but with groved decking you still to use a brush

Itâ€™s not bad, however its unlikely to last long it you have a large decking area to cover. After several uses (3) and after being washed each time the pad is unlikely to mange another 2 as its starting to disintegrate.

A note from us...

Thank you for this helpful feedback on the applicator pad, if it does start to wear after some use there are refills available. Longevity of the pad can vary depending on the product you are using and the surface you are applying to. For example if the decking is a smooth side up the pad is ideal and makes the job very quick and easy.

If the decking is grooved it can reduce slightly the pads life, particularly old decking that may be splinters or less smooth for the pad to glide over. On some occasions a brush may also be required if the grooves are quite deep and the pad can not apply thoroughly across the board.

It will certianly help with any decking job however and reduce the working time and save your back.
