Back

Ronseal Chalky Furniture Paint is perfect for transforming old and new wooden furniture, doors and cupboards. Unlike traditional chalk paint products, it protects them too, so there's no need to overcoat with a wood wax or lacquer for protection. You still get that chalky, flat matt finish that looks great, but it's tough too, so it will look great for longer.

Please Note: This product is not suitable for use on wooden floors.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that furniture and other interior wooden surfaces to be painted are clean, dry and free from dirt, dust and any other surface contaminates. Open doors and windows for good ventilation and lay down dust sheets to cover areas not to be painted.

Bare or New Wood

  1. Lightly sand furniture and other interior wood to help with adhesion and final finish
  2. Sand using 120grit sandpaper in the direction of the wood grain
  3. After sanding, vacuum the wood to be painted and surrounding area to remove all traces of sanding dust
  4. Wipe the wood with a clean, white, lint free cloth dampened with white spirit
  5. Fill any holes or minor imperfections in the wood with Ronseal High Performance Wood Filler or Ronseal Multi Purpose Wood Filler

Previously Painted Wood

  1. Old paint or varnish that is in good condition should be lightly sanded with 240grit sandpaper
  2. Old paint or varnish that is flaking or cracked must be sanded back to bare wood
  3. For the best results, use an electric sander using 120grit sandpaper
  4. Sand in the direction of the wood grain
  5. Always wear a suitable dust mask when sanding and especially so when sanding back old coatings and finishes
  6. Vacuum the wood and surrounding area to remove all traces of sanding dust
  7. Wipe the wood with a clean, white, lint free cloth dampened with white spirit

Application

Application

Back

Always do a small test area to assess the colour and compatibility of the finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Chalky Furniture Paint should only be applied in temperatures above 10°C. Stir the paint thoroughly before and periodically during use to ensure a consistent finish.

  1. Apply Ronseal Chalky Paint with a good quality synthetic brush in the direction of the wood grain
  2. Apply 2 coats, leaving 4 hours between coats

Q. What's the difference between traditional chalk furniture paint and Ronseal Chalk Paint?

A. Most chalk paint products on the market are made to their own unique formulation and usually require a wax top coat, to seal in the finish. Although Ronseal Chalky Furniture Paint is not a traditional chalk paint, it has the benefit of providing a chalk furniture paint finish that does not require a wax top coat. As with traditional chalk paint products, it is perfect for a wide range of upcycling and Shabby Chic furniture projects.

Not the colour on the tin or described by the name
I chose this "Midnight Blue" colour because I wanted a really dark navy blue paint. The colour shown on the tin is just such a truly dark blue but the paint inside is more of a bright teal colour. It is very much lighter than the tin and the colour name suggest. Couldn't use it at all. A total waste of money.

Furniture renovation in a can
All good - just needed a really good stir. Made a marked improvement to a donated drawer chest.

Easy to use paint
I bought this paint from Wood finishes direct during lockdown when it was very difficult to get paint from the usual DIY shops. I had already used it so I knew it was easy to use and had a great chalky finish. I bought it here as all other internet sites were either sold out or selling it at exorbitant prices. Wood finishes direct emailed me when it was in stock and it not up their price just because of lockdown as many other sellers did.

Needs a lot of coats
Product was easy to apply, it did take a number of coats (7 in total) to achieve total coverage which was very labour intensive but I am pleased with the end result.

A note from us...
Thank you for sending in some feedback on this product, I am sure it will help many people with their projects.

This product does not require a primer, however if it is a light colour applied to a mid or dark wood or previously painted surface, it may take a few more coats to get complete coverage. It can also depend on method of application and how much you apply. Which can be different for everyone.

I am pleased you have got a great result and if you feel like sharing please feel free to send before and after photos to any of our Social Media Pages or via Email.
