Polyvine Decorators Varnish is a highly durable finish that protects a wide range of surfaces against finger marks, stains, scuffing and colour fading. It is perfect for use on interior wood, fabric, paintwork, wallpaper, plaster, murals and mouldings.
Ensure that surfaces to be varnished are clean, dry and free from dirt, dust, grease, wax, polish and any other surface contaminants.
Bare or New WoodAlways do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times. This product is not suitable for exterior bare timber or vinyl wall covering.
Polyvine Decorators Varnish should not be applied over uncured oil-based paint as this may cause discoloration. When applied over an emulsion / latex paint, it is possible that Decorators Varnish could draw certain stains through the paint which were not otherwise visible. In this case a dedicated stain sealer should be used.
Polyvine Decorators Varnish can be applied by synthetic bristle brush or spray applicator. Rollers are not recommended as stippling may occur.
Please note: Where a 'dead flat' finish with a high degree of protection is required, Polyvine recommend that surfaces are first treated with 2 coats of gloss or satin varnish and then finished with a thin coat of dead flat varnish. This provides a more durable finish than using 'dead flat' on its own. This is only necessary for surfaces that come in to direct contact with people and other surfaces, and that require a tough, durable 'matt' finish. The 'satin' and 'gloss' varnishes in this range are chemically more durable than the 'matt'.
Cleaning EquipmentApplication equipment can be cleaned using soap and water before the varnish dries. Wipe any excess off surfaces with a damp, lint-free cloth. Any dried deposits will need a paint stripper to remove them.
Surfaces coated with Polyvine Decorators Varnish can be wiped clean with a dampened lint-free cloth. Never soak wooden surfaces with water or use household detergents or cleaners as these can damage the finish.
The Decorators Varnish takes around 35 minutes to be touch dry, it needs around 1-2 hours between coats and should have 60 minutes after the final coat before use. It will be fully cured within 5 days at an average of 20°C.
You can apply Polyvine Decorators Varnish using a brush, roller, or spray gun. Make sure that the roller is specifically for use with water-based products. It is important to avoid using a high-pile roller, as it can leave excess material on the surface and can cause stippling (a raised, textured surface) and/ or air bubbles. For a smooth finish with even coverage, use overlapping roller strokes and use a brush to manoeuvre around corners and details.
Polyvine Decorators Varnish is best suited over water-based finishes. Try a test area before completing the project to ensure adhesion.
We would recommend something with some better resistance when applying to a kitchen worktop. Take a look at Polyvine Heavy Duty Interior Wood Varnish instead.
Yes, newly painted wood should first be sanded to create a key. Older paints where the paint itself has failed should be stripped back to bare wood. Please note, if you are applying this over solvent-based paints, we would recommend a test area first to ensure it can adhere.
Polyvine's Decorators Varnish has been designed specifically for this kind of project. Do a small test area before completing to be certain.
The Decorators Varnish has been tried and tested over vinyl wall coverings but not necessarily something as specific as this. We would suggest a test area to check adhesion.
We would recommend Imitation Gold/ Silver be protected with Polyvine Multi-Surface Lacquer.
Many of our customers use the Polyvine Decorators Varnish for this purpose. Due to the environment, we would recommend protecting your paint or wallpaper using three coats of satin or if a matt sheen is preferred, try two coats of satin followed by one coat of dead flat.
Try a test area first to test the adhesion. Polyvine Decorators Varnish works well to protect colours and details from fading in the sun with its UV protection.
By mixing the Decorators Varnish with emulsion, you are essentially diluting the paint down, causing fewer pigments and needing more coats on the surface. We would recommend applying this over emulsion instead.
Absolutely, the Decorators Varnish is wipeable. We recommend using a PH balanced cleaning solution to help protect the coating for longer. Take a look at Manns Premier Anti-Bac Cleaner Spray for cleaning kitchen surfaces.
The special microporous structure, resists water ingress. The water repellent surface is highly durable. and allows the finished surface to breathe. The minute micro pores repel mould and other airborne contaminants whilst allowing air to pass through, protecting the decor from algae, mildew and fungal attack.
We recommend using a good quality synthetic brush such as ProDec Premier Synthetic Brush or Purdy Syntox Angled Brush. Unlike natural brushes, those made with synthetic materials will not absorb water and swell, which makes them ideal for working with water-based products.
Can I apply Decortaors Varnish to a lampshade to protect the colour for longer?Absolutely, the Polyvine Decorators Varnish can be applied to a range of substrates including fabrics to help protect the colour from fading.
