Holzol Decking Oil is suitable for most types of garden wood, including softwood and hardwood decking, garden furniture, sheds, fences and more. Formulated from a blend of natural oils modified with urethane resin, it's safe for plants and animals when dry.
Decked areas to be treated should be clean, dry and free from dust, dirt oil, grease, wax and silicone.
New hardwood decking may require a period of weathering, to open up the wood grain before oiling. This makes it easier for the oil to penetrate into the surface of the timber. The time required is dependent on the type of decking-board and wood used. Check with the decking supplier for guidance on how long decking boards should be left to weather before oiling. New and untreated softwood decking can be oiled immediately.
Old coating systems such as decking paints and varnish-like decking stains must be fully removed back to bare wood before oiling.
Please note: Decking that has been oiled within the last year may not be ready to absorb a new coat of decking oil. It is advisable to treat a small test area first to test absorption. If the oil on the test area fails to penetrate, dry in the specified time, goes tacky, sticky or forms a film on the surface that can be easily scratched off, then delay oiling.
Always do a test area before starting any project to check suitability and compatibility. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.
Stir the tin thoroughly before and periodically during application to ensure a consistent finish.
To prolong the life of the decking finish and timbers, it is recommended that decked areas should be swept with a stiff broom to remove surface debris such as dirt, plant and insect matter from the grooves on a regular basis. This is especially important for decking surrounded by trees and plants that shed their leaves and for decking located in damp or shaded areas.
High foot traffic areas that start to appear worn or tired looking, or that are losing the ability to repel water effectively can be easily restored. First clean with a suitable decking cleaner then re-apply a thin coat of Holzol Deck Oil to the affected area for an invisible repair.
