Cuprinol UV Guard Decking Oil is a water-based decking treatment for use on all exterior hardwood and softwood decking boards. This product was formally branded as 'Cuprinol Decking Oil and Protector'.
Please note: Cuprinol brand the clear version of this product 'Natural'. The clear or 'natural' version of this product contains a small amount of added, non colour specific pigment to provide the UV protection.
Ensure the wooden decking is clean, dry, and free from any dirt or loose debris prior to oiling.
For all bare wood decking including tanalised, pressure treated and preservative impregnated decking timbers.
Hardwood decking usually requires a period of weathering to allow the surface grain to open, which allows for better absorption of the decking oil. Check the decking manufacturer's guidance on how long decking should weather before treating.
Old coating type finishes such as decking paints, varnishes and varnish type stains must be fully removed back to bare wood before oiling. Depending on the condition and type of finish, it may require more than one attempt to fully remove the old coating.
Always do a small test area before beginning any project to assess product performance and results. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.
Stir thoroughly before and periodically during application to ensure a consistent finish.
Cuprinol UV Guard Decking Oil can be spray applied using Cuprinol Spray and Brush or other compatible garden pump sprayer. Refer to the sprayer user guide for full instructions.
Do not apply in temperatures below 5°C, in damp conditions or if rain is due before the product has dried. Cover any surfaces nearby to protect from over-spray. Any over-spray should be cleaned up immediately (whilst still wet) with water and household detergent.
Decked areas can be cleaned at regular intervals using Cuprinol Decking Cleaner.
To maintain the surface finish and its protective properties, re-apply a fresh coat of Cuprinol UV Guard Decking Oil as required, following the Preparation and Application instructions above.
Unfortunately, you would not be able to mix an oil with a varnish. If you are looking for a more durable product, try Manns Premier UV Decking Oil
Yes, this would be ideal for sleepers as long as it is not painted or varnished
We would first recommend using a preserver such as Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear to protect the timber against all the nasties of the outdoor environment. The UV Guard Decking Oil can then be applied afterwards to seal this in and protect the timber.
This wouldn't be a suitable product to go over a painted decking as it will not be able to penetrate through the paints film, creating a rather sticky surface! A good quality decking paint doesn't usually require a topcoat to seal it in. You must be careful not to layer the products up too much as each will create a thick film, making it susceptible to peeling and flaking.
